A fascinating journey through the history and secrets of the only fortified medieval town on the Catalan coast.
The Walls of Tossa de Mar are an open-air site and, as such, can be visited freely 24 hours a day. There is no need to book a ticket, as access is free. For a more complete experience, we recommend walking around the walled enclosure both during the day and at dusk, when the lighting gives it a special charm. You can find additional information about Tossa de Mar on the Tossa de Mar Tourism website.
No, not at all! Access to the Walls of Tossa de Mar is completely free. You can explore them at your own pace at no cost. They are one of the gems of the Costa Brava that you can enjoy without worrying about your budget.
To leisurely explore the entire walled enclosure, enjoy the views, take photos, and stroll through the streets of the Old Town, we recommend setting aside at least 1–2 hours. If you also want to visit the lighthouse or the Municipal Museum, plan for a little more time. It is a very pleasant visit that invites you to take things slowly.
The Walls of Tossa de Mar are the only surviving example of a fortified medieval enclosure on the Catalan coastline. They were built in the 12th century and reinforced in the 14th century to protect the population from pirate attacks. Their excellent state of preservation and historical and artistic value have made them a National Historic-Artistic Monument since 1931.
The best time to visit is in spring or autumn, when the weather is milder and there are fewer crowds. If you visit in summer, I suggest going early in the morning or at sunset to avoid the intense heat and the busiest times. The views in the light of sunset are spectacular.
The terrain inside the Old Town and access to the walls include slopes, steps, and cobbled streets, which makes accessibility difficult for people with reduced mobility or baby strollers. While some sections are more accessible, the full experience may be challenging. We recommend checking with the local tourist office for specific options or adapted routes.
Inside the walled enclosure, you can visit the Tossa de Mar Municipal Museum, located in Casa Falguera, and climb up to the lighthouse for panoramic views. Just below the walls, you will find the beautiful Cala Codolar and Platja Gran. The surrounding area offers numerous coves, the historic center of Tossa with its shops and restaurants, and boat trips along the coast.
I recommend wearing comfortable shoes, as there are cobblestones and some slopes. If you go in summer, do not forget sunscreen and water. Take the opportunity to get lost in the narrow lanes of the Old Town, discover its hidden corners, and enjoy the local cuisine in one of its charming restaurants. And of course, do not forget your camera to capture the stunning views!
