A network of waterways that defines the essence and history of the charming town of Edam.
As public spaces, the canals are accessible 24 hours a day throughout the year for a leisurely walk. However, if you want to sail along them, boat rental services and tours usually operate roughly between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
Access to walk and enjoy the views from the bridges is completely free. You only need to pay if you choose to take a whisper boat tour or visit specific attractions such as the Edam Museum.
For a relaxed walk that lets you enjoy the architecture and take good photos, we recommend setting aside between one and a half and two hours. If you decide to rent a boat or stop at local cafés, the visit can easily stretch to half a day.
These canals were the beating heart of shipbuilding and trade during the Dutch Golden Age, long before Amsterdam took center stage completely. Walking here is like seeing the living history of 17th-century prosperity reflected in the houses of former merchants and their quays.
The ideal time is on Wednesday mornings in July and August, to coincide with the famous Edam Cheese Market. If you are looking for peace and perfect canal photos, we suggest going early in the morning or at sunset in spring.
Although the terrain is mostly flat, keep in mind that many streets are cobbled and some historic bridges are raised or narrow. It is manageable, but it is recommended to go with a companion or plan your route along the main streets to avoid the most uneven stretches.
You are very close to the famous Cheese Weigh House and the Great Church, known for its stained glass windows. In addition, just a few kilometers away by bicycle or bus, you can round out the day by visiting the picturesque fishing village of Volendam.
For a unique perspective that most tourists miss, rent a whisper boat, a silent electric boat that you can steer yourself without a license. It will let you see the rear gardens of the historic houses and pass beneath the old wooden bridges.
