The heart of Messina is revealed through its impressive astronomical clock, a mechanical jewel that comes to life every noon, telling centuries of history.
The Bell Tower and Astronomical Clock is open from Tuesday to Sunday, generally from 10:00 to 13:00 and from 16:00 to 19:00 (it is closed on Mondays). Every day at noon you can watch the famous mechanical show. For last-minute updates, visit the official city council website.
Admission costs approximately €8 for adults and €5 for children (ages 6-12) and visitors over 65. Children under 6 enter free. You can buy tickets at the ticket office or in advance on TicketOne.
We recommend between 30 and 60 minutes, especially if you plan to watch the full noon performance, when the mechanical sculptures come to life with music and movement.
It is the largest astronomical clock in the world (built in 1933), a symbol of Messina's rebirth after the 1908 earthquake. It features biblical and allegorical figures that form a complex synchronized mechanism.
Spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October) offer pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds. Always arrive 20 minutes before noon to secure a good spot for the show.
The exterior access is manageable, but the tower does not have an elevator. The square allows you to watch the mechanical show from street level. For specific details, contact +39 090 772281.
Within 300 meters you have the Messina Cathedral with its relic of the Virgin Mary's hair, the spectacular Orion Fountain, and the Regional Museum.
1) Stand in front of the clock 15 minutes before 12:00. 2) Wear comfortable shoes for walking across the cobbled square. 3) Don't forget your camera: the parade of golden figures is unique in the world!
