Donde los muros cuentan chismes de viajeros y el lago Atitlán guarda secretos
Access is exclusively by water; you must take a public boat from Panajachel (Tzanjuyú dock), which generally operates from 6:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Although the site is an open area accessible throughout the day, visiting during daylight hours is recommended to ensure return transportation. You can see the exact location here: View location on Google Maps.
Enjoying the views and architecture of the Arches and the area around the dock is free of charge, as it is an open-access public space. However, you should consider the boat fare (approximately Q25-Q30 quetzales each way) and any spending if you decide to visit the adjacent restaurants.
A visit of 1 to 2 hours is ideal for appreciating the architecture, taking photos of Lake Atitlán, and relaxing by the water. If you plan to eat at one of the lake-view restaurants or go up to the main village, we suggest allowing at least half a day.
Santa Cruz La Laguna is a village of Kaqchikel origin with a history shaped by its geographic isolation and spiritual connection to the lake. The Arches represent part of the infrastructure that has coexisted with the lake’s rising waters, symbolizing the resilience and adaptability of local architecture in the face of nature.
Definitely in the morning, preferably before 11:00 AM, to avoid the "Xocomil" (a strong wind that stirs up the lake) and enjoy calm waters. The dry season, from November to April, offers clear skies and unmatched views of the volcanoes.
It is important to know that Santa Cruz La Laguna has very steep terrain; although the dock area and the Arches are flat, access involves getting on and off boats. It is not adapted for wheelchairs, and reaching the main village requires climbing steep slopes or taking a local tuk-tuk.
Right in the area, you can visit the famous hotel and restaurant The Lost Iguana or the ATI Divers dive center. You can also take a scenic walk to the neighboring village of Jaibalito, known for being one of the quietest spots on the lake.
Always carry cash (quetzales), since ATMs are scarce or nonexistent on this side of the lake. Also, wear comfortable, non-slip shoes, as the docks can be wet and the paths are rustic.
