A historic oasis on the Mediterranean, witness to Egyptian royalty and a center of political and social intrigue.
Access to the garden area and the seaside promenade is usually open all day, although it is best to visit between 9:00 AM and 6:00 PM to make the most of the daylight. You can get there easily by taking a local taxi from central Marsa Matruh or by using the microbuses that run along the coast toward the beach area.
Generally, access to the outdoor spaces and main viewpoints is free, allowing you to enjoy the views at no cost. If you want to enter adjacent private areas or use specific beach services, there may be a small fee in local currency, so it is advisable to carry some cash.
It is a short and relaxing visit; allowing 30 to 45 minutes will be enough time to stroll around and enjoy the scenery. It is the perfect place for a quick photo stop before continuing on to the more distant beaches.
This place was one of the favorite coastal retreats of King Farouk, the last monarch of Egypt, who loved the privacy and the turquoise waters of Marsa Matruh. The gardens represent the luxury of a bygone era and offer a historical glimpse into how Egyptian royalty enjoyed the Mediterranean.
The best time to visit Marsa Matruh is from May to October, with sunset being the most magical time of day to see the gardens. At that hour, the sun drops over the sea, creating incredible colors, and the temperature is much more pleasant for walking.
Although there are paved areas, the ground can be uneven and sloped because of the coastal terrain, which makes full wheelchair access difficult. It is recommended to go with a companion and check on site for the flattest areas to avoid steps or sand.
You are in a privileged location very close to the famous Rommel Cave Museum and the legendary Cleopatra’s Bath. You can also continue along the coastal road to reach the spectacular Agiba Beach, known for its cliffs.
Wear comfortable walking shoes, bring sun protection, and carry water, as the sea breeze can be misleading about the strength of the sun. Don’t forget your camera, because the panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea from this elevation are undoubtedly among the best in the whole city.
