Dong Ba Market is open daily from 5:00 AM to 7:00 PM. It is located on Tran Hung Dao Street, on the banks of the Perfume River. The easiest way to get there is by taxi (Grab) or by bicycle from downtown Hue (15 minutes).
It is completely free! You only pay if you buy food, handicrafts, or souvenirs. Remember to negotiate prices; it is a common practice. Bring cash (Vietnamese dong), as few vendors accept cards. Bargaining tips: Official guide.
Between 1 and 2 hours is enough to explore its 3 floors and the outdoor stalls. If you plan to shop or try local food, set aside half a day. Do not miss the food area on the second floor for a break!
It is the oldest market in Hue, with more than 120 years of history. Rebuilt in 1889 after a major flood, it was an economic hub during the Nguyen dynasty. Today it remains the commercial heart of the city. More historical details: Hue Heritage.
Getting there early is worth it: from 6:00 to 8:00 AM you will see fresh produce arriving and fewer tourists. Avoid the hottest hours (11:00 AM - 3:00 PM). In the afternoon, the atmosphere is festive but more crowded.
It has some limitations: uneven floors, narrow aisles (1-1.5 m), and steep stairs between levels. The ground floor is the most accessible, but we recommend visiting with a companion. More accessibility info in Vietnam: Official guide.
Within 2 km you will find: the Imperial City of Hue (13 minutes by taxi), Thien Mu Pagoda (15 minutes), and the Perfume River piers for cruises. Combine them into one day! Interactive map: Heritage Route.
1) Wear closed-toe shoes (slippery floors), 2) Keep an eye on your belongings in crowded areas, 3) Try specialties such as banh khoai (a local pancake) or coconut milk coffee. Bring a reusable bag if you plan to shop!
