A fascinating journey through the history and art of the iconic Notre-Dame Basilica in Ho Chi Minh City.
Due to a major restoration project expected to continue until 2027, the interior is usually closed to tourists, opening only occasionally for specific Sunday Masses, such as the 9:30 AM service in English. However, the square outside is accessible 24 hours a day to admire the façade.
Admission is completely free, both for viewing the exterior and for attending religious services when allowed. Do not trust anyone trying to sell you tickets nearby, as this is an active place of worship.
Since interior access is restricted because of the restoration work, a visit of 20 to 30 minutes is enough. This gives you time to walk around Paris Square, take photos of the colonial architecture, and enjoy the atmosphere without rushing.
Built between 1863 and 1880 by French colonists, what makes it unique is that all its materials, including the red bricks from Toulouse, were imported directly from France. It is a symbol of Catholicism in Vietnam and a gem of Neo-Romanesque style that you can explore even better with the IAudioguia audio guide.
I recommend going early in the morning, around 7:00 AM, or at sunset. The soft light highlights the red color of the bricks without the oppressive midday heat, and you will find fewer crowds in the square.
The outer square and surrounding gardens, known as Paris Commune Square, are flat and paved, making wheelchair access easier. However, if interior access is allowed, keep in mind that this is an old building with steps at the main entrance.
You are in the heart of District 1, so right next door you will find the famous Saigon Central Post Office, designed by Gustave Eiffel. You are also just a short walk from Book Street and Reunification Palace.
Be very careful with traffic when crossing to get the perfect photo, as motorbikes do not stop. Also, even if you cannot go inside, walk all the way around the building; the restoration scaffolding is part of its current story and offers a unique perspective on conservation.
