The tunnels are open daily from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. From Dong Ha, you can take a taxi or motorbike taxi for about 40 km (around 1 hour), or join a tour from Hue or Dong Ha; see Vietnam Travel for options.
Admission costs 40,000 VND (about 1.6 USD) per adult, free for children under 1.3 m tall. It includes access to the tunnels and a basic guide; pay in cash, as cards are not always accepted.
A typical visit lasts 1-2 hours, including the tour of the 2 km of tunnels open to the public. Allow more time if you want to hear stories from local guides for a fuller experience.
Built between 1965 and 1972 during the Vietnam War, they protected more than 17,000 civilians from American bombing, serving as a shelter, hospital, and underground school. They represent Vietnamese resilience in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).
The best time is from February to April (dry season, less rain and moderate heat); go in the morning to avoid crowds and the midday heat. Avoid the rainy season from September to December.
They are not very accessible: there are narrow, steep stairs with no ramps or elevators. People with mobility issues can view the outdoor exhibits, but the underground interior is challenging; check with the site for accommodations.
Nearby are Hien Luong Bridge and the Ben Hai River (symbols of the DMZ), 20 km away; also Khe Sanh Combat Base (40 km) or the Quang Tri Museum. Combine it with a DMZ tour for a full day; info at TripAdvisor.
Bring light clothing, comfortable shoes, and a flashlight (the tunnels are dark and humid); drink water and use mosquito repellent. Hire a local guide for authentic stories and go early for fewer people; info phone: +84 233 385 2254.
