A historic monument that symbolizes the resilience and indomitable spirit of the Vietnamese people.
The citadel's outdoor area is open 24 hours a day, but the interior museum is open from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. It is located in central Dong Ha (Quang Tri Province), about 1 hour and 30 minutes from Hue by car. We recommend checking routes on Vietnam Tourism.
Access to the complex is free. You only pay a small fee (about 20,000 VND / $0.80 USD) if you visit the interior military museum or hire guide services.
We recommend setting aside 1.5 to 2 hours: 45 minutes for the citadel and walls, 30 minutes for the museum, and extra time for the memorial and gardens.
It was a strategic military stronghold during the Vietnam War (1968-1972). This was the site of the 81-Day Battle, one of the bloodiest confrontations, where South Vietnamese soldiers held out.
From February to August (dry season). Go early in the morning or after 3:00 PM to avoid the heat. Avoid September to January because monsoon rains can make access difficult.
The terrain is uneven, with destroyed areas, steps, and dirt paths. It is not recommended for wheelchairs. The interior museum does have accessible access.
About 30 minutes away are the Vinh Moc Tunnels and the Demilitarized Zone Museum. To the north, Cua Viet Beach is ideal for sunsets.
Wear closed shoes, and bring water and a hat. Rent an audio guide at the entrance to better understand the historical context. Respect the memorials and follow the marked paths.
