From April to August (dry season), with temperatures of 28–35°C. Avoid September to November because of heavy rain. Sunrise (5:30–6:30) and late afternoon (17:00–18:30) are ideal for avoiding crowds.

Take the opportunity to visit: 1) Phong Nha-Ke Bang (National Park, 50 km northwest), 2) Tam Toa Church (historic ruins), and 3) the 17th-century Quang Binh Gate, all in Dong Hoi.
