Hoa Lu, the ancient capital, is usually open from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. In Tam Coc, the boat rides operate from 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM. You can reach both places by taxi, motorbike, or organized tours from Tam Coc or Ninh Binh. I suggest checking the most up-to-date hours on the official tourism website of Ninh Binh Province if available.
Admission to the ancient capital of Hoa Lu is approximately 20,000 VND (less than 1 USD) per person for the temple complexes. In Tam Coc, the main cost is the boat ride, which is usually around 120,000 VND (about 5 USD) per person, with an additional boat fee if you are traveling alone. There may also be small charges for restroom use or parking.
For Hoa Lu, with its temples and surroundings, I would recommend between 1.5 and 2 hours. The boat ride in Tam Coc lasts approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, not including waiting time. So, to enjoy both without rushing, plan at least half a day, around 4 to 5 hours in total, including transfers.
Hoa Lu was the capital of Vietnam in the 10th and 11th centuries, marking a crucial period of independence. It is home to temples dedicated to Emperors Dinh Tien Hoang and Le Dai Hanh, founders of the first dynasties. Visiting it means immersing yourself in the cradle of the Vietnamese nation and understanding its rich heritage. You can learn more on the UNESCO page about the Trang An Landscape Complex, which includes Hoa Lu.
The best time is between March and May or from September to November, when the weather is drier and temperatures are pleasant. To avoid crowds and the midday heat, I recommend going early in the morning (before 9:00 AM) or later in the afternoon (after 3:00 PM) for both sites.
Hoa Lu, with its temple steps and uneven terrain, can be challenging for people with reduced mobility. The boat rides in Tam Coc require getting in and out of the boat, which could be difficult. It is advisable to check directly with local tour operators or your hotel for specific options and assistance. Unfortunately, the general infrastructure in the area is not fully adapted.
There is much more! Do not miss Bich Dong Pagoda, a set of caves and temples on a nearby mountain. Also worth visiting are the Bai Dinh Pagoda complex, the largest Buddhist center in Vietnam, and Mua Cave with its stunning panoramic views after climbing hundreds of steps. All are a short scooter or taxi ride away.
Of course, here are a few: bring sunscreen, a hat, and insect repellent. Wear comfortable walking shoes and respectful clothing for the temples, covering your shoulders and knees. Carry cash for small purchases or tips, especially for the rowers. Consider hiring a local guide to gain a deeper understanding of the history. If you are offered flowers or other expensive products on the Tam Coc boat ride, do not feel pressured to buy.
