Discover Muong Thanh Airfield in Dien Bien Phu. A unique experience to learn about its history and significance.
The airfield is open every day from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm. To get there, you can take a taxi or motorbike taxi from the center of Dien Bien Phu (15 minutes). We recommend confirming opening hours with the local tourist office.
Access to the airfield is free, as it is part of the historic battlefield open to the public. Some related sites, such as nearby museums, may charge small fees (approx. 30,000 VND).
It is recommended to allow 1–2 hours. The time varies depending on your historical interest, as the site includes runway remains, trenches, and bilingual explanatory panels (Vietnamese/English).
It was the French operations center during the Battle of Dien Bien Phu (1954), which marked the end of colonialism in Indochina. The final fighting before the French surrender took place here.
From November to April (dry season), with cooler temperatures and less rain. Mornings are ideal (before 10 am) to avoid intense heat and crowds.
The ground is uneven, with dirt and grassy areas. There are main paved paths but with some slopes. We recommend bringing an all-terrain wheelchair or checking with the visitor center (+84 215 382 4971).
1 km away is the Dien Bien Phu Victory Museum and A1 Hill (bunkers and memorial). Also nearby is de Castries' headquarters, 300 meters away. All are part of the historic complex.
Wear comfortable shoes and bring water and a hat. Hire a local guide (available at the museum) to better understand the context. Visit the Victory Museum first for background before touring the battlefield.
