Discover Hoan Kiem Lake in Hanoi. A unique experience to learn about its history and meaning.
Hoan Kiem Lake is a public space open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For Ngoc Son Temple, located on Jade Island, the usual opening hours are from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. You can reach the temple by crossing the iconic The Huc Bridge (Bridge of the Rising Sun). No official ticket is required to walk around the lake.
Walking around Hoan Kiem Lake is completely free. However, to enter Ngoc Son Temple and visit Turtle Tower, there is a small entrance fee (approximately 30,000 VND for adults). I recommend bringing cash for this and for possible souvenirs.
For a relaxed visit, including a walk around the lake, crossing The Huc Bridge, and exploring Ngoc Son Temple, I suggest allowing between 1.5 and 2 hours. If you stop to observe local life, enjoy a coffee, or go shopping, you could extend your stay.
Hoan Kiem Lake, or Lake of the Returned Sword, is at the heart of many Vietnamese legends. The most famous tells how Emperor Le Loi received a magical sword from a giant golden turtle from the lake to drive out the Chinese invaders and later returned it here. It is a symbol of Vietnam’s independence and resilience.
The best time to visit is early in the morning (from 6 to 8 AM) to see locals practicing tai chi and exercising, or at sunset to enjoy the colors of the sky. On weekends, the area around the lake becomes a pedestrian zone, perfect for strolling. If you can avoid the rainy season (May to September), your experience will be more pleasant.
The walkway around Hoan Kiem Lake is flat and wheelchair accessible, making it easy to enjoy the views. However, access to Ngoc Son Temple involves crossing The Huc Bridge, which has some steps and may be a bit more challenging. Even so, I recommend checking directly with local staff for the most up-to-date accessibility information.
You are in the heart of Hanoi, so there is plenty nearby. Around the lake you will find the famous Old Quarter, the Hanoi Opera House, St. Joseph’s Cathedral, and the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre. There are also many museums and temples within walking distance.
Of course! Wear comfortable shoes for walking, bring plenty of water, and use sun protection or a hat. If you visit Ngoc Son Temple, dress respectfully with your shoulders and knees covered. In the evening, be cautious if someone offers you a cyclo ride; make sure to agree on the price beforehand. And do not forget your camera to capture the beauty of the lake and its surroundings!
