A pristine natural paradise in the Mekong Delta, known for its rich biodiversity and historic lighthouse.
To visit Hon Khoai Island, you first need to go to Năm Căn Port in Cà Mau, where speedboats depart for the island in approximately 30–40 minutes. Access is possible throughout the year, although it is essential to check the weather forecast and confirm boat availability with local operators, as the sea can be rough during the rainy season from June to November.
Access to the island is free, as it is a natural area without an official ticket office. However, you will need to pay for the boat transfer from the mainland. The cost varies depending on the operator and the number of passengers, and it is usually negotiated directly with boat owners at the port.
It is recommended to set aside at least a full day to enjoy a relaxed visit to Hon Khoai Island. Allow about 3–4 hours to explore the lighthouse, walk around the island, and relax on the beach, plus the boat travel time to and from Cà Mau.
Hon Khoai Island is best known for its historic lighthouse, built by the French in the early 20th century, which was essential for navigation in the Gulf of Thailand. During the Vietnam War, the island served as a strategic observation post, and some fortifications can still be seen today.
The best option is to leave Cà Mau early, around 7:00 AM, to take advantage of the morning light and calmer seas. In addition, visiting the lighthouse at sunset offers spectacular views of the sun setting over the Gulf of Thailand.
Unfortunately, Hon Khoai Island is not adapted for visitors with reduced mobility. The terrain is natural and steep, and reaching the lighthouse requires walking on dirt paths and climbing steps, so the visit requires good physical condition. Access to the mainland pier may also present difficulties.
After returning to the mainland in Cà Mau, you can explore the city, visit Mũi Cà Mau National Park, the southernmost point of Vietnam, or tour the region’s characteristic mangroves and local fishing villages. If you have time, U Minh National Park is another famous natural attraction in the area.
It is vital to bring sunscreen, a hat or cap, and plenty of water, as sun exposure is intense and there are not many shaded areas or shops on the island. We also suggest carrying cash in the local currency, VND, since there are no ATMs, and remember to negotiate the boat price before boarding. For safety, confirm the return schedule with the boat driver.
