A stunning natural tunnel carved by the Nang River, home to thousands of bats and fascinating geological formations.
Puong Cave is generally open during daylight hours, approximately from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, although it is advisable to confirm locally as schedules may vary. It is located right in the heart of Ba Be National Park, and the most common way to reach it is by boat tour on Ba Be Lake, which usually includes a stop at the cave.
Entry to Puong Cave itself, once you arrive, is usually free. However, to access the cave, you will almost always need an entrance pass to Ba Be National Park, which does have a cost. In addition, the main expense will be renting a boat to reach it, as there is no direct land access.
For exploring Puong Cave itself, with a short boat stop, you will need between 20 and 40 minutes. However, keep in mind that the journey to the cave is part of a longer boat excursion on Ba Be Lake, which can last from 2 to 4 hours and may include other stops such as Dau Dang Waterfall or local villages.
Puong Cave is special because of its unique geology, as it was formed by the Nang River, which flows through it. It is a tunnel more than 300 meters long with impressive stalactites and stalagmites, as well as a home for thousands of bats. Its importance lies in its natural beauty and in being an integral part of the ecosystem and landscape of Ba Be National Park.
The best time to visit Puong Cave and Ba Be National Park in general is during the dry season, from September to April, when the weather is cooler and more pleasant. During the day, early mornings or afternoons are ideal to avoid intense heat, although inside the cave the temperature is fairly constant. Avoid the rainy season (May to August), as water levels can rise.
Unfortunately, Puong Cave is not accessible for people with reduced mobility or wheelchairs. Reaching the cave requires a boat trip, and once inside, the terrain can be uneven, dark, and slippery, with some rocky formations that make passage difficult. There are no ramps or specific accessibility facilities.
Puong Cave is in the heart of Ba Be National Park. Very close by, you can visit Ba Be Lake itself, Dau Dang Waterfall (often included in boat tours), An Ma Temple, and Tay ethnic villages such as Pac Ngoi, where you can experience local culture and stay in stilt houses. The park also offers excellent opportunities for trekking and kayaking.
My best advice is to combine your visit to Puong Cave with a boat tour on Ba Be Lake, as it is the most efficient and scenic way to explore it. Be sure to bring a flashlight (although your boat operator will probably have one), mosquito repellent, and comfortable clothing. If you are sensitive to darkness or bats, keep that in mind. And do not forget your camera to capture the natural beauty!
