A lush sanctuary of melaleuca trees and wildlife in the Mekong Delta, an immersion in Vietnam's river biodiversity.
Tra Su Nature Reserve is generally open every day from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. To enter, you must first arrive at the reception center, and from there you will take a combination of motorboats and traditional rowboats to go deeper into the forest. You can see the exact location here: View location on Google Maps.
It is not free; the price is usually around 200,000 VND (about 9 USD) per person for the full package. This fee includes park admission, the speedboat transfer, and the more peaceful rowed sampan ride through the green-covered canals.
Ideally, allow between 2 and 3 hours to enjoy the experience without rushing. This will give you enough time for the boat rides, a walk along the famous bamboo bridge, and a climb up the observation tower for panoramic photos.
Tra Su is a cajeput forest planted in 1983 to rehabilitate acidic soil, and today it is a vital biodiversity sanctuary in the Mekong Delta. It is home to more than 70 species of birds, including painted storks and other endangered species, making it an ecological paradise.
The best time is during the flood season, from September to November, when duckweed covers the surface and creates a bright green carpet. As for the time of day, go early in the morning, between 7:00 and 9:00 AM, or at sunset, when the thousands of birds are most active and visible.
Access is difficult for wheelchair users, as the main activity requires getting on and off small, unstable boats. In addition, the paths and bridges are usually made of wood or bamboo, which makes moving around difficult without full assistance.
If you are staying in the Chau Doc area, I recommend combining your visit with Sam Mountain and the Ba Chua Xu Temple, located about 30 km away. These are places of great spiritual significance and offer incredible views of the border with Cambodia.
Bring mosquito repellent and strong sun protection, as you will be exposed to the sun on the boats. If you enjoy photography or nature, a pair of binoculars is essential for observing bird nests from the watchtower.
