Donde los gigantes verdes guardan secretos de contrabandistas y tormentas
The Ombú Forest does not have strict opening and closing hours, as it is a natural area. To reach Cabo Polonio, you must leave your vehicle at the entrance to the park and take one of the authorized 4x4 vehicles that will take you to the village. Once there, the forest is within walking distance, usually after crossing the built-up area.
There is no fee to enter the Ombú Forest. It is a natural area open to the public. However, keep in mind that transportation on the authorized vehicles to enter and leave Cabo Polonio does have a cost, which varies by season. Check with the Cabo Polonio Terminal for updated fares.
To fully enjoy the Ombú Forest and take some photographs, I would say that an hour and a half to two hours is enough. This will give you time to explore it at a relaxed pace and appreciate its uniqueness without rushing.
The uniqueness of this forest lies in the fact that ombús usually grow in isolation, but here they appear as a dense forest. It is a unique ecosystem in Uruguay and South America, a true natural heritage site that connects us with the native flora of the Río de la Plata region. It is a living testimony to local biodiversity.
Spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) are usually the best seasons because of the mild weather. If you visit in summer, I suggest going early in the morning or at sunset to avoid the strongest heat and enjoy beautiful light for photos. There are also fewer people at those times.
Since the Ombú Forest is a natural environment with uneven sand and dirt paths, accessibility for people with reduced mobility or wheelchairs is limited. Caution is recommended and, if possible, check directly with a local transport provider in Cabo Polonio to see whether they offer specific assistance.
Cabo Polonio is a magical place! You should not miss the Cabo Polonio Lighthouse, which offers incredible views and sea lions. You can also see the sea lion colony, enjoy its unspoiled beaches, and experience its bohemian atmosphere without electricity.
I recommend bringing comfortable shoes for walking on sand, sunscreen, a hat, and insect repellent, especially if you go at sunset. Do not forget your camera to capture the unique beauty of the ombús. And most importantly: respect nature and do not leave any litter behind!
