An iconic hill in Piriápolis, crowned by a bull statue and rich in history and panoramic views.
Cerro del Toro is a natural public space. It does not have specific opening or closing hours like a museum. You can reach it on foot from the base, near the Panoramic Road of Piria, or by car via Route 10. The hike usually takes about 30 to 45 minutes. Check the Piriápolis map to locate the access points easily.
Good news! Access to Cerro del Toro is completely free. There is no admission fee. It is a public space for everyone to enjoy. That said, it is always important to care for the surroundings and not leave any litter so it stays this beautiful.
For a full visit, I recommend setting aside between 1 hour and 1 hour 30 minutes. This includes the walk up if you choose to hike, enjoying the panoramic views from the top, taking some photos, and heading back down. If you go by car and only stop to enjoy the view, 30 to 45 minutes may be enough.
Cerro del Toro is special because of its iconic bronze bull sculpture, which gives the hill its name. This work was commissioned by Francisco Piria, the founder of Piriápolis, to symbolize strength and energy. It is said that the water flowing from its mouth has energizing properties. In addition, it offers one of the most spectacular views of Piriápolis, the coast, and Pan de Azúcar Hill.
Spring, from September to November, and autumn, from March to May, are ideal because of the mild weather and green landscapes. As for the best time of day, I recommend going at sunrise or sunset. The light is incredible for photos, and you can enjoy the views with fewer people around. In summer, avoid the middle of the day because of the heat.
The walk up Cerro del Toro can be somewhat demanding, with uneven paths and slopes, so it is not fully accessible for people with reduced mobility or strollers if you try to go up on foot. However, it is possible to drive to a point near the summit, which makes access easier for those who cannot complete the full hike. Once at the top, the viewpoint area is fairly level.
Piriápolis is full of interesting places! Near Cerro del Toro, you can visit San Antonio Hill with its cable car and chapel, or Piria Castle (currently closed for renovations, but you can still see it from the outside). The Promenade of the Argentines is also perfect for a walk, and the Port of Piriápolis is ideal for seeing the boats and enjoying the restaurants.
Of course. Here are a few tips: wear comfortable walking shoes, bring enough water, and use sun protection such as a hat and sunscreen. If you go at sunset, arrive in good time because the sun goes down quickly. Do not forget your camera, as the views are spectacular. Most importantly, respect the environment, do not leave litter, and stay on the marked paths to enjoy nature at its best. For more information and maps, visit the official Piriápolis website.
