Corazón pulsante de José Ignacio, Uruguay, esta plaza evoca la esencia de un balneario chic donde el mar, el arte y la gastronomía se entrelazan en un espacio abierto y moderno.
The square itself is a public space open 24 hours a day for walking and enjoying the sea views. However, to climb the lighthouse, hours are usually from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and from 3:00 p.m. until sunset.
Access to the square and surrounding area is completely free. There is only a very small fee (cash is usually requested) if you decide to climb the stairs to the top of the lighthouse for the panoramic view.
The visit is short but intense; 30 to 45 minutes is enough to walk among the rocks, take amazing photos, and climb the lighthouse. It is the perfect amount of time to listen to one chapter of your audio guide while you explore.
The lighthouse was erected in 1877 to prevent the constant shipwrecks along this rocky and dangerous coast of the South Atlantic. It is the historic emblem that transformed a fishing village into the exclusive destination it is today.
Definitely at sunset; the view of the sun setting over Mansa Beach from the rocks is an unforgettable sight. If you want to climb the lighthouse without lines, I recommend going early in the morning.
Accessibility is limited; the ground in the square is uneven with grass and rocks, and the lighthouse does not have an elevator. However, you can still enjoy the views from the paved streets surrounding the square.
You are at the tip of the peninsula, surrounded by Brava Beach and Mansa Beach, and just steps from the famous restaurant La Huella. All the culinary charm of José Ignacio is just a few minutes away on foot.
The wind is usually strong at the point, so always bring a light jacket or windbreaker. Wear comfortable shoes for walking on the rocks and keep your camera ready for some of the best postcard views in Uruguay.
