Discover Lombard Street in San Francisco. A unique experience to learn about its history and significance.
As a public residential street, Lombard Street is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with no access restrictions. However, to respect the residents' rest, it is strongly recommended to visit during daylight hours and avoid making noise at night.
Visiting Lombard Street is completely free, whether you choose to drive down its famous curves or walk along the side stairways. There are no ticket booths or hidden fees; it is one of the best free activities in San Francisco.
The route is short; walking down and taking photos will take about 20 to 30 minutes. If you decide to drive down, keep in mind that the queue on Hyde Street may add another 30 to 45 minutes to your visit, especially in summer.
Designed in 1922, its eight tight turns were built to reduce the hill’s natural 27% grade, allowing early automobiles to go up and down safely. Today it is known worldwide as 'the crookedest street in the world' and is an icon of urban engineering and landscaping.
I recommend going early in the morning, before 9:00 AM, to get good light for your photos and avoid the tourist crowds that arrive later. Spring and summer are the ideal seasons, as the hydrangeas will be in full bloom, creating a spectacular scene.
Pedestrian access is via steep stairways, which makes wheelchair use difficult; however, you can drive down to experience the curves. Alternatively, the views from the top at Hyde Street or the bottom at Leavenworth Street are excellent accessible vantage points.
You are in a prime location; just a few minutes away on foot you will find the famous Fisherman's Wharf and the chocolate factory at Ghirardelli Square. In addition, the Cable Car stop leaves you right at the top, easily connecting you with the rest of the city.
The best strategy is to take the Powell-Hyde Cable Car line to the top of the street and walk down at a relaxed pace while enjoying the views toward Coit Tower and the bay. Always remember to stay on the sidewalks and stairways, as the roadway is for cars and the houses are private residences.
