The trail is open 24 hours a day year-round, as it is part of Chugach State Park, but visiting during daylight hours is recommended in winter. To get there, drive along Glen Alps Road from Anchorage; parking is available, but there is a parking fee during peak season. More details are available on the park’s official website: Chugach State Park.
Access to the trail and Chugach State Park is free, and no tickets are required. However, there is a $5 per day parking fee at Glen Alps during the summer season (May to September). Check for updates on the official website.
The round-trip trail is about 4.4 km long with an elevation gain of 914 meters, so it is recommended to allow 2 to 4 hours, depending on your pace and whether you stop for photos. It is ideal for a half-day outing, with time to enjoy the views from the summit.
Flattop Mountain is an icon of Chugach State Park, established in 1970 to preserve Alaska’s natural beauty, and it offers panoramic views of Anchorage and Cook Inlet. Historically, the area was used by Indigenous peoples such as the Dena'ina for hunting and gathering, highlighting its cultural significance in the region.
The best time is summer, from June to August, when the weather is warmer and there is minimal snow, with long days for hiking. Go early in the morning to avoid crowds and heat, ideally before 9 AM; in winter, it is possible with snowshoes, but check the forecast first.
The trail is steep and rocky, with a sharp ascent, so it is not accessible for wheelchairs or people with limited mobility. Good physical condition is required; consider easier alternatives in the park such as the Powerline Pass Trail for less demanding options.
Nearby, in Chugach State Park, you can explore the Glen Alps Trailhead for other hikes such as Thunderbird Falls, or visit the Alaska Native Heritage Center in Anchorage for Indigenous culture. Also, Lake Hood is ideal for watching floatplanes, just a 20-minute drive away.
Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, sturdy hiking boots, and layered clothing for the changing weather; check trail conditions by calling Chugach State Park at (907) 345-5014. Sign the summit register and do not forget your parking permit to avoid fines.
