The Royal Mile is a public street, so it is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for strolling freely. However, most shops and museums in the area are usually open from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
Walking along the Royal Mile is completely free, making it an essential and budget-friendly activity. You only need to pay if you decide to enter specific attractions such as the famous Edinburgh Castle at the start of the route.
If you simply walk from one end to the other without stopping, it will take about 20–30 minutes downhill. However, to explore the closes and enjoy the atmosphere, I recommend setting aside between 2 and 3 hours.
It is the backbone of the Old Town, historically connecting the royal power of the Castle with the residence of the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Its length is a Scottish mile, and it has been the center of civic and commercial life for centuries.
To avoid crowds and take the best photos, go early in the morning, before 9:00 AM. If you are looking for a festive atmosphere, visit in August during the Fringe Festival, when the street fills with street performers.
It can be challenging because of the old cobblestone paving and the steep slope of the hill. However, the sidewalks are wide, and most of the main attractions have adapted access.
You are in the center of everything; do not miss St Giles' Cathedral, located halfway along. You are also just a few steps from colorful Victoria Street and the mysterious underground Mary King's Close.
Wear very comfortable shoes, as the cobblestones can be hard on your feet. Also, do not stay only on the main street; dare to step into the side closes to discover the true medieval essence.
