Audio Guide of the Chester City Walls

The Chester City Walls are an outdoor public walkway, so they are open 24 hours a day all year round for you to explore at your own pace. You can access them free of charge from multiple points around the city, with the steps beside Eastgate Clock being one of the most popular and central entrances.

Access to the walls is completely free; you do not need tickets or advance reservations. They are one of the best-preserved historic attractions in the United Kingdom that you can enjoy at no cost, ideal for visiting alone or with family without affecting your budget.

The full route is approximately 3 kilometres (2 miles) long and usually takes between 45 minutes and an hour if you walk without long stops. However, I recommend allowing at least 90 minutes to enjoy the views, take photos, and appreciate the historic details at a relaxed pace.

These walls are the most complete in all of Great Britain, and their origins go back to the Roman fortress of Deva Victrix, founded nearly 2,000 years ago. Walking along them is a journey through time, where you will see layers of Roman, medieval, and English Civil War history in a single defensive structure.

The best time to visit is early in the morning to avoid crowds on the narrow sections, or at sunset to see the city in spectacular light. Although they are open year-round, spring and summer are ideal for avoiding rain and strong winds in the elevated areas.

The full circuit is not fully accessible because of the many sections with historic steps and uneven surfaces. However, there is step-free access via ramps in specific areas such as Newgate, allowing you to enjoy partial stretches with fine views.

The route offers privileged views of the famous Eastgate Clock, the most photographed clock after Big Ben. You will also pass by the impressive Chester Cathedral, the Roman Amphitheatre, and enjoy a unique perspective of the Roodee Racecourse.

Wear comfortable shoes with good grip, as some stones can be slippery, especially if it has rained. For a complete experience, do not just look around; use an audio guide or read the information panels, as the true magic of the place lies in the unseen stories of its battles and legends.
