The castle is open year-round, but opening hours vary by season. From April to September it is usually open from 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM, while in winter it closes earlier. Most visitors spend between 1.5 and 2 hours. This includes time to explore the ruins, see the visitor centre exhibition with historical artefacts, and enjoy panoramic views of Loch Ness and its possible legendary 'inhabitants.' Arriving early lets you explore at a more relaxed pace.

It played a key role in the Wars of Scottish Independence (14th century), repeatedly changing hands between Scots and English forces. Its keep is one of the best examples of medieval architecture in the Highlands. The visitor centre explains its strategic role in controlling the Great Glen.

The quietest months are April-May and September-October. In summer (July-August), arrive before 10:00 AM or after 3:30 PM. The early morning hours offer better light for photos of Loch Ness and fewer tourists. Bring warm clothing even in summer!
