About 1 to 2 hours are recommended to explore the main ruins, including the tomb of Saint John and the mosaics. If you go with a guide, you may want to extend it to 2.5 hours for a deeper experience.

Built in the 6th century by Emperor Justinian over the supposed tomb of Saint John the Apostle, who according to tradition died in Ephesus, it is a key site in early Christian history and an impressive example of Byzantine architecture, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Spring (April to June) or autumn (September to October) are ideal because of the mild weather and smaller crowds; go early in the morning to avoid the midday heat and enjoy the soft light on the ruins.
