An idyllic beach on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast, famous for its sea castle, the Maiden's Castle, which rises majestically from its waters.
Kizkalesi Castle, also known as Maiden's Castle, is an open-air archaeological site with access generally available during daylight hours. You can reach Kizkalesi Beach by car, bus, or taxi from Mersin. Once at the beach, you can take a boat (local boatmen offer the service) or, if the sea is calm and you feel up to it, you can even swim the few hundred meters to the island. Here is a link to the location on Google Maps so you do not get lost: Kizkalesi Beach on Google Maps.
Access to Kizkalesi Beach is free. To reach the castle on the island, most visitors choose a boat ride, which does have a cost. The price is usually negotiable with the local boatmen, so do not hesitate to bargain a little to get the best round-trip price.
To fully enjoy Kizkalesi Castle and its surroundings, we recommend planning at least half a day. This will allow you to take the boat to the castle, explore it at your own pace, enjoy the views, and relax on the beach before or afterward. If you plan to swim, add extra time for the journey.
Kizkalesi Castle is wrapped in a romantic and tragic legend. It is said that a king built the castle on an island to protect his daughter from a prophecy foretelling her death by snakebite. However, fate caught up with her through a snake that arrived hidden in a basket of grapes. The story symbolizes the futility of trying to change destiny and gives the place a unique mystical aura.
Spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) are ideal for visiting Kizkalesi, as the weather is pleasant and the crowds are smaller. During summer, early morning or late afternoon are the best times to avoid the intense heat and enjoy softer light for photographs. Avoid the middle of the day in summer.
Unfortunately, access to Kizkalesi Castle on the island can be challenging for people with reduced mobility. Boat transport may not be suitable, and the terrain inside the castle is uneven and includes steps. However, Kizkalesi Beach is accessible and offers excellent views of the castle from the shore.
There is plenty to see nearby. Do not miss the ruins of the ancient city of Corycus, right on the coast opposite the castle, with its impressive land fortifications. You can also explore the Heaven and Hell Caves or Asthma Cave, both fascinating natural sites. For more information, we recommend checking the Mersin Tourist Office website.
Of course. We recommend bringing sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water, especially in summer. If you plan to swim to the castle, keep your belongings secure in a waterproof bag. Do not forget your camera to capture the stunning views, and be prepared to negotiate the boat price with the local boatmen. Most importantly, immerse yourself in the legend and enjoy the magic of the place.
