Discover Patara Beach in Kaş. A unique experience to explore its history and significance.
Patara Beach is open year-round, 24 hours a day, but the adjacent archaeological site operates from 8:00 to 19:00 in summer and from 8:00 to 17:00 in winter. You can get there by bus from Kaş or Fethiye, or by car via the D400 highway; there is free parking near the entrance. For more details, visit the official Turkish tourism website at GoTurkey.
The beach itself is free and open to the public, but to visit the Patara archaeological site, which includes the ancient ruins next to the beach, there is an entrance fee of approximately 200 TRY per adult (2023 prices, check for updates). Children under 8 enter free, and there are discounts for students. Buy tickets at the site ticket office.
It is recommended to spend at least 2 to 3 hours enjoying the beach and exploring the nearby ruins, but if you plan to swim and relax on the sand, you could stay half a day or more. It is an ideal spot for a half-day visit combined with other local attractions.
Patara was one of the most important cities of ancient Lycia, the birthplace of Saint Nicholas and a key port on the Roman trade route. The ruins include a theater, an ancient lighthouse, and walls that highlight its role in Greco-Roman history. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a protected habitat for sea turtles.
The best time is from May to October to enjoy the sun and swimming, with warm temperatures ideal for the beach. Visit early in the morning or at sunset to avoid the intense midday heat and enjoy more privacy. In summer, the evenings are perfect for seeing turtles nesting.
The main beach has soft sand and is accessible via flat paths, but the dunes and some parts of the archaeological ruins may require walking on uneven ground or climbing stairs. There are no specific wheelchair facilities throughout the site, so assistance is recommended; contact the visitor center for more information at +90 242 843 11.
Nearby you will find the ruins of Xanthos and Letoon, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites about 20 to 30 minutes away by car, and the town of Kaş, 40 km away, with its coves and harbors. You can also visit the Letoon Amphitheater or take an excursion to the Saklıkent waterfalls, ideal for a full day of exploration.
Bring sunscreen, water, and comfortable shoes for the sand and the ruins; there are not many services on the beach, so bring the essentials. Respect the protected turtle areas by avoiding camping outside designated zones, and consider renting a parasol for shade. For English-language guides, check Turkey Tourism.
