A breathtaking canyon carved by the Esen River, a natural oasis of wild beauty and adventure.
Saklıkent National Park, the local name of the canyon, is usually open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. during the summer season. It is about a 45-minute drive away; you can see the exact route on Google Maps or take a dolmuş, the local shared minibus, from Kalkan’s main station.
Access is not free, but admission is very affordable, with a small fee in Turkish lira for adults and students. Remember to bring cash, as you may need extra money if you decide to rent rubber shoes or helmets at the entrance.
To enjoy the experience without rushing, I recommend setting aside between 2 and 3 hours. This will allow you to walk through the safe sections of the gorge, take amazing photos, and relax afterward at the riverside restaurants.
Known as the Hidden City, Saklıkent is one of the deepest canyons in the world at 300 meters and was discovered by a shepherd only a few decades ago. It is an impressive testament to geological erosion and a vital refuge of fresh water in the region.
The ideal season is from April to October, as the water level can be dangerous in winter. To avoid large tour groups and get the best photos, try to arrive before 10:00 a.m. or after 4:00 p.m.
Partially; there is a suspended wooden walkway at the beginning that allows visitors to see the canyon without getting wet and is relatively accessible. However, the main adventure involves walking over slippery rocks and through water currents, which is not suitable for people with reduced mobility.
Very close by you have Gizlikent Waterfall, ideal for a more jungle-like hike, and the ancient ruins of the Lycian city of Tlos. Combining Tlos, the waterfall, and the canyon makes the perfect day itinerary.
The water is freezing and the rocks are slippery, so it is essential to wear closed-toe water shoes, not flip-flops. If you bring electronics, make sure to use a good waterproof bag, as you are very likely to get wet up to your waist.
