Ancient Roman theater known for its excellent state of preservation and acoustics.
The Aspendos archaeological site is generally open every day from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM in summer and until 5:00 PM in winter. To get there, you can take a minibus from central Antalya toward Serik, or rent a car and drive დაახლოებით 45 minutes along the D400 highway. It is a very popular place, so plan your transportation in advance.
Admission to the archaeological site costs approximately 450 TL (updated for 2024), although prices may vary, so it is advisable to check the official information. Tickets are purchased directly at the ticket office at the entrance to the complex. Remember to bring cash, as credit cards are not always accepted.
To explore the Roman theater, the ruins of the ancient city, and walk by the aqueduct, most visitors need between 1.5 and 2.5 hours. If you plan to take detailed photos or simply sit and enjoy the theater's acoustics, allow about 3 hours. The visit is mainly on foot over uneven ground.
The Aspendos theater is considered one of the best-preserved examples of a Roman theater in the world, built in the 2nd century AD during the reign of Emperor Marcus Aurelius. It is famous for its excellent acoustics, which allow a whisper from the stage to be heard in the highest rows, and for its nearly intact architecture, including 41 rows of seats with capacity for about 15,000 spectators.
The best time to visit is in spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October), when temperatures are pleasant and there are fewer crowds. If you must visit in summer, go early in the morning (8:00-9:00 AM) or late in the afternoon to avoid the intense midday heat. Sunsets offer beautiful light for photography.
Access for people with reduced mobility is limited due to the archaeological nature of the site. The theater has access ramps, but the upper seating areas are steep and made of uneven stone. The aqueduct area is completely uneven. It is recommended to contact the site in advance or visit only the lower theater section if there are mobility difficulties.
Near Aspendos, you can visit the ancient city of Perge, another impressive archaeological site with columns and a well-preserved theater. There is also Kurşunlu Waterfall, ideal for a refreshing swim and nature walks. In addition, the Eurymedon River, now called Köprüçay, offers options for boat trips and turtle watching.
Wear comfortable, sturdy footwear, as you will be walking on ancient stones and uneven ground. Use sunscreen and a hat, as there is little shade on the site. Do not forget to bring water, since the facilities are basic and summer heat can be intense. Finally, bring cash for admission and perhaps to buy souvenirs or water locally.
