Ulu Cami is open every day from approximately 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., but it closes briefly during prayer times (five times a day). To reach it, head to Bursa’s historic center, near the Çarşı square area; it is easy to reach on foot or by bus from the train station. Check the official Turkey tourism website for updated hours: GoTürkiye - Ulu Cami.
Admission to Ulu Cami is completely free, as it is an active place of worship and a heritage site open to the public. No ticket is required, although a voluntary donation for its maintenance is appreciated. For more details, visit the cultural heritage portal: Museums of Turkey.
It is recommended to allow between 30 and 45 minutes for a full visit, giving yourself time to admire the interior, the 20 domes, and the calligraphic details. If you are interested in history, you may want to extend your visit to an hour. Plan your itinerary in advance so you do not have to rush.
Built between 1396 and 1400 by order of Sultan Bayezid I, Ulu Cami is one of the earliest great examples of Ottoman architecture and symbolizes the expansion era of the Ottoman Empire. Its 20 domes and central fountain (şadırvan) make it a cultural icon of Bursa, the former Ottoman capital. More information at UNESCO - Bursa and Cumalıkızık.
The best time is in spring (April-May) or autumn (September-October) for pleasant weather and fewer tourists; avoid summer because of the heat. Visit early in the morning, around 9:00 a.m., to avoid crowds and enjoy the natural light highlighting the interiors. Check the forecast in local apps to plan ahead.
The mosque has several steps at the main entrance, which can make wheelchair access difficult, but there is an alternative ramp on the east side for better accessibility. The interior is mostly flat once inside. Contact the Bursa tourism center at +90 224 220 18 42 for specific assistance.
Near Ulu Cami you will find the covered market of Koza Han, famous for its silks, and the Green Tomb just a 10-minute walk away. You can also explore the Muradiye Complex, with historic Ottoman tombs. Use Google Maps or the tourism website: Bursa Tourism Office for routes.
Wear modest clothing, covering your shoulders and knees, and remove your shoes before entering; women may need a headscarf, which is available at the entrance. Avoid prayer times for a quieter visit, and consider joining an audio guide to enrich the experience. Download the official Turkish tourism app for additional tips.
