Imagina que unas cabras curiosas te llevan a un palacio subterráneo olvidado: eso pasó aquí en 1997, y ahora te lo cuento todo como si estuviéramos charlando con un té en mano.
As a historic settlement and a charming district in Bolu Province, Eskiçağa is open to visitors 24 hours a day, every day. You can easily reach it by road from the D-100 highway; it is a perfect stop if you are traveling between Istanbul and Ankara.
Visiting the streets, the exterior architecture, and the natural surroundings of Eskiçağa is completely free. You do not need to make reservations in advance; simply arrive and enjoy the historic walk at your own pace.
To explore the village, admire the traditional architecture, and visit the local historic spots, I recommend setting aside 1 to 2 hours. If you plan to eat there or visit the nearby lake, allow at least half a day.
Eskiçağa has a rich Ottoman legacy, having been a crucial point on ancient trade routes. It stands out for its historic mosque and baths (hammams) dating from the period of Yıldırım Bayezid, reflecting the classical architecture of the time.
Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are ideal for enjoying the mild weather and Bolu’s colorful landscapes. Winter offers spectacular snowy views, but it requires warm clothing and caution on the road.
You should keep in mind that, as a historic area with old streets, the paving may be uneven in some sections. It is passable, but it is recommended to go with a companion if you use a wheelchair so you can better manage the natural slopes of the terrain.
You are very close to the stunning Lake Yeniçağa (Bird Paradise), ideal for nature watching. You can also take the opportunity to visit the famous Yedigöller National Park if you have private transportation.
Wear comfortable walking shoes and do not leave without trying the local cuisine in the small eateries. The region is famous for its natural products and traditional Bolu cooking, which perfectly complements the cultural visit with an audio guide to understand the context.
