Sirince es un pintoresco pueblo en las colinas cerca de Selçuk, Turquía, famoso por su arquitectura tradicional de casas de piedra y su rica herencia cultural greco-otomana.
As it is an inhabited village, its streets are open 24 hours a day, although most shops and restaurants operate roughly from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM. The easiest way to get there is by taking a dolmuş (local minibus) from Selçuk station, an inexpensive journey of about 15 minutes with very frequent departures.
Access to the village is completely free, since it is not a closed museum but a living village. Your only expenses will be transportation, parking if you go by private car, and whatever you choose to enjoy in its fruit wine cellars or craft shops.
I recommend setting aside between 3 and 4 hours for a complete and relaxed visit. This will give you enough time to walk its steep cobbled streets, visit the historic churches, and enjoy a tasting of its famous local wines without rushing.
It was originally a Greek Orthodox settlement whose old name, 'Cirkince' (ugly), was used to discourage outsiders. After the 1923 population exchange, it preserved a unique architecture of white houses and wooden windows that blends Greek heritage with modern Turkish culture.
Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are ideal for avoiding the oppressive heat while climbing its hills. Try to go early in the morning, before 10:00 AM, or at sunset on weekdays to avoid the crowds arriving from cruise ships.
You should keep in mind that Şirince is built on a hill and its streets are made of very uneven and steep cobblestones. Unfortunately, access for wheelchairs or for people with walking difficulties is quite complicated and requires significant physical effort.
You are in a privileged location just 8 km from the ancient city of Ephesus, one of the most important archaeological sites in the world. You can also take the opportunity to visit the House of the Virgin Mary and the Selçuk Museum on the same day.
Wear very comfortable, non-slip shoes, as you will be walking a lot on slippery slopes. Do not forget to bring cash in Turkish lira for the small shops, and be sure to try the blackberry or pomegranate wine, which are the village's iconic specialties.
