Where sultans slept, viziers stole, and stones keep the secrets of empires that were crumbling
Alaeddin Hill is open daily, approximately from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (check for possible seasonal changes). It is located in central Konya, within walking distance of the main square or accessible by tram (Alaeddin stop). For the exact route, see the Konya municipal website.
No, access to the Alaeddin Hill complex is completely free, including the mosque and the park. Only optional costs such as donations or purchases at nearby cafés may apply.
We recommend 1 to 2 hours to explore at a relaxed pace: 30 minutes for the mosque and mausoleums, 30 minutes to visit the small archaeological museum, and additional time to enjoy panoramic views from the park.
It was the political center of the Sultanate of Rum (12th-13th centuries), with 8 tombs of Seljuk sultans in the mausoleum. The mosque (1221) is one of the oldest in Anatolia, built on Byzantine foundations.
Spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October) are ideal thanks to mild temperatures. Mornings (9-11 a.m.) are best to avoid groups, although sunset offers spectacular views of the Konya skyline.
There are paved paths leading to the mosque, but with steep slopes. The interior of the complex has steps. There are no specialized ramps, so wheelchair users may require assistance.
Within a 15-minute walk you will find: the Mevlana Museum (a must-see), the İnce Minareli Medrese Museum, and the historic Kapu Bazaar. All are within a 1 km radius.
Wear comfortable shoes (the ground is uneven), modest clothing to enter the mosque (scarves are available to borrow), and combine your visit with other central sites to minimize travel. Don’t miss the rose gardens!
