Discover Kemeraltı in Izmir. A unique experience to learn about its history and significance.
Kemeraltı is open every day of the week, with shops and bazaars generally operating from 9:00 to 20:00, although some close on Mondays. You can easily reach it by bus, tram or taxi from the center of Izmir; the closest stop is Basmane. Check the official map at www.izmir.com.tr for detailed routes.
Visiting Kemeraltı is completely free, as it is a historic open-air market. You will only pay for purchases, food or souvenirs at the shops and stalls.
It is recommended to spend at least 2-3 hours to explore the alleys, bazaars and mosques without rushing. If you want to try local food and shop, you can extend it to half a day.
Kemeraltı is one of the oldest markets in the Middle East, founded in the 17th century during the Ottoman Empire, and was a key trading hub on the Silk Road. Today it is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site for its architecture and blend of Greek, Jewish and Turkish cultures.
Spring (April-June) or autumn (September-October) are ideal due to the mild climate; avoid summer because of the intense heat. Go early in the morning for fewer crowds and pleasant temperatures.
The cobbled and narrow streets make it not fully accessible for wheelchairs, although there are flatter main routes. I recommend contacting the Izmir tourist information center at +90 232 293 11 50 for adapted options.
Nearby you will find the Clock Tower (Saat Kulesi), the Ancient Agora and the port of Izmir, all less than 15 minutes walking. Also explore the Etz Hayim Synagogue for more Jewish history.
Bring cash in Turkish lira to haggle in the bazaars, wear comfortable shoes for the uneven streets and try local lokum or kebabs. Download an audio guide at iaudioguia.com for fascinating stories as you walk around.
