The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, built in the 4th century BC for Mausolus, a Persian satrap, is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and an iconic example of Hellenistic architecture with Persian influences. Although much of it was destroyed by earthquakes and looting, its ruins symbolize the splendor of ancient Caria, and its legacy endures in the term 'mausoleum' that we use today.
Spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October) are ideal for avoiding the intense summer heat and crowds; choose early morning for cooler weather and fewer tourists. Avoid midday in July–August, when temperatures exceed 30°C.
The site has cobbled paths and some uneven areas, which can be challenging for wheelchairs, but there are ramps in the main sections and assistance is available at the Bodrum Museum. Contact the museum at +90 252 316 1616 for special arrangements or check guides at the Bodrum Museum website.
Nearby you will find Bodrum Castle, home to the Museum of Underwater Archaeology, and the ancient Acropolis of Halicarnassus; you can also visit the Bodrum Amphitheatre just 2 km away. Together they form a perfect historical circuit for a full day in the area.
Bring comfortable shoes for walking through the ruins, sunscreen, and water, especially in summer; consider an audio guide to enrich the historical experience. Download the Ministry of Culture app or visit muze.gov.tr for maps and more tips, and combine your visit with lunch at the nearby harbor cafés.
