A Byzantine monument that tells the complex history of Pergamon, from its Christian roots to its Ottoman evolution, revealing layers of time and culture.
The archaeological site is generally open every day from 08:00 to 19:00 in summer and until 17:00 in winter (the ticket office closes earlier). The main access is by going up Ayasuluk Hill in Selçuk, and you can check updated hours on the Museums of Turkey website.
Admission is paid, with a price usually equivalent to around 6 to 10 euros (the fare in Turkish lira varies because of inflation), but it is free for small children. If you plan to visit Ephesus and other sites, I recommend getting the Museum Pass Turkey to save money and avoid lines.
To explore the ruins at a relaxed pace, take photos, and understand the site’s history, it is recommended to set aside between 45 and 60 minutes. If you combine the visit with Ayasuluk Fortress, which is right next door, you should add another 30 minutes.
This site is essential because it contains the tomb of Saint John the Apostle, who lived and died in Ephesus while writing his Gospel. Emperor Justinian built a vast basilica here in the 6th century, turning it into one of the most important pilgrimage centers of the Middle Ages.
The best season is spring (April-May) or autumn (September-October) to avoid the intense heat. As for the time of day, I suggest going early in the morning (08:00 AM) to enjoy the site almost in solitude and with perfect light for photos.
Unfortunately, accessibility is limited because it is an archaeological site with uneven ground, ancient steps, and dirt paths. Although some areas can be seen from the main walkways, full wheelchair access is difficult.
The location is excellent; down the hill you will find the historic Isa Bey Mosque and the ruins of the Temple of Artemis. In addition, the magnificent Ephesus Museum is just a few minutes away on foot in the center of Selçuk.
Wear comfortable, non-slip shoes, as you will be walking on ancient marble and dirt, and do not forget a hat and water in summer because there is very little shade. To really understand what you are seeing among the ruins, it is highly recommended to have an explanatory audio guide downloaded.
