It is open from 08:00 to 19:00 from April 1 to October 1, and from 08:30 to 17:30 for the rest of the year. It is easily reached by car or bus from Göreme (about 45 minutes); there is parking at the entrance. Check the official museum website for updates.

It is recommended to allow 1 to 2 hours to comfortably explore the 8 open levels. You can move faster if you only see the highlights, but take time for the chambers and tunnels. Ideal for a morning visit.

Possibly built by the Hittites in the 8th century BC and expanded by the Byzantines in the 6th-7th centuries, it served as a refuge against Arab and iconoclast persecutions. It is the largest in Cappadocia, with capacity for 20,000 people, and a UNESCO heritage site for its unique troglodyte architecture.

Spring (April-June) or autumn (September-October) to avoid the stifling summer heat and winter cold. Early morning is ideal for fewer crowds and better light at the entrances. Avoid midday in July-August.

It is not very accessible: there are narrow stairs, low passageways, and steep level changes in the underground sections. Only the upper entrance is suitable for wheelchairs; visiting is not recommended if you have serious mobility issues. Check surface-level alternatives on the official website.

Nearby are Kaymaklı Underground City (9 km away), Ihlara Valley (1 hour away), and Göreme with its Open-Air Museum (45 min). Combine it with a Cappadocia tour to see rock formations and hot air balloons.
