Antiguo teatro helenístico-romano excavado en una colina de Bodrum, con capacidad para miles de espectadores y vistas impresionantes al mar Egeo. Testigo de siglos de representaciones y eventos culturales.
The theatre is generally open every day from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM in high season, although in winter it may close earlier, around 5:00 PM. It is located on the main Bodrum-Turgutreis road, and you can easily get there by taking a local minibus or by walking uphill for about 15 minutes from the center.
Unlike other archaeological sites, admission to visit the theatre ruins during the day is usually free. However, if you plan to attend one of the nighttime summer concerts, you will need to buy a ticket for the specific event.
It is a short but rewarding visit; generally, 30 to 45 minutes are enough to walk through the seating area, take in the history, and capture panoramic photos. It is a perfect stop before dinner or while on your way to the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus.
This theatre is a gem of ancient Halicarnassus, built in the 4th century BC during the reign of King Mausolus and later expanded by the Romans. With an original capacity of 13,000 spectators, it is one of the best-preserved ancient theatres in the area.
Without a doubt, I recommend going at sunset; the theatre’s orientation offers a spectacular view of Bodrum Castle and the Aegean Sea bathed in golden light. You will also avoid the intense midday heat, since there is little shade in the seating area.
Due to its age and original architecture with steep stone steps, access to the upper areas is difficult for wheelchairs. However, the lower part of the site can be reached to appreciate the scale of the structure more comfortably.
You are very close to pure history; within a short distance you will find the ruins of the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. You can also head down toward the harbor to visit the famous Castle of St. Peter.
Wear shoes with good grip because the ancient stones can be slippery, and bring water if you visit in summer. For a complete experience, do not just look around; use an audio guide to understand the acoustics and the stories that took place where you are standing.
