A ghost village in a mountain oasis, a testament to human resilience and the power of nature.
The site is open 24 hours a day all year round, as it is an abandoned open-air village. It is easily reached by car from Tozeur via the P16 road, about 30 minutes away; there is free parking near the entrance. For more details, see the official Tunisia Tourism website.
Visiting is completely free, with no need to buy tickets. Only consider transportation costs or optional guides. Check updates on TripAdvisor.
It is recommended to allow 1 to 2 hours to explore the ruins, the oasis, and the views. You can extend your visit if you do some light hiking in the surrounding area. It is ideal for a half-day visit combined with other nearby sites.
Chebika was a Berber village inhabited from Roman times until the 1970s, when its residents abandoned it because of water scarcity caused by flooding. Today it stands out for its cascading ruins above an oasis, representing traditional Tunisian life in the desert. Its cultural significance lies in its Berber architecture adapted to the arid environment.
Winter (November to March) is ideal thanks to mild temperatures (15-25°C), avoiding the extreme summer heat. Go at sunrise or sunset for spectacular photos with golden light over the ruins. Avoid midday in summer because of the intense sun.
It is not very accessible; the terrain is rocky and uneven, with stairs and steep paths leading to the upper ruins. People with reduced mobility can enjoy the lower views, but assistance is recommended. Contact local agencies for adapted options.
Nearby are the Chebika Gorges (5 minutes away), the ghost village of Tamerza (15 km), and Mides (20 km), perfect for a desert tour. Also nearby is Tozeur with its medina and palm groves (30 minutes). Explore the Chebika-Tamerza-Mides route.
Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, a hat, and comfortable hiking shoes; there are no services on site. Hire a local guide for authentic stories or use audio guide apps. Respect the fragile environment and go in a group for safety in the desert.
