An annual festival celebrating contemporary art and cultural exchange in the heart of Mahres, Tunisia.
The festival is usually held in summer (July-August) from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Mahres is 25 km from Sfax and can be reached by taxi or louage (shared transport). Check exact schedules on the Mahres Municipality website.
Most exhibitions are free, although some special installations may require a ticket. We recommend bringing cash if you would like to purchase artworks or support local artists.
It is recommended to spend between 2 and 4 hours enjoying the main exhibitions. The time may vary if you take part in interactive workshops or meetings with artists.
Founded in 1983, it is one of the oldest artistic events in Tunisia. It promotes intercultural dialogue with local and international artists, with a focus on contemporary art and environmental sustainability.
July and August are the main festival months. Visit early (10:00 AM-12:00 PM) or at sunset (5:00 PM-7:00 PM) to avoid the intense heat and enjoy spectacular light on the outdoor installations.
The main areas have adapted access, although some installations on the beach or in historic areas may have uneven ground. Contact +216 74 277 015 (Tourist Office) for specific details.
Don't miss: 1) the Medina of Sousse (UNESCO World Heritage Site, 70 km away), 2) El Jem Amphitheatre (60 km), and 3) the beaches of Chott Meriem. More info at Tunisia Tourism.
1) Wear comfortable shoes for mixed terrain, 2) bring a hat and water (you can buy them at local stalls), 3) download the interactive map from Tunisie Art to locate the installations.
