These ancient millenary reservoirs, the Aghlabid Basins, are a masterpiece of Islamic hydraulic engineering and a testament to the splendor of Kairouan.
They are open from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM in summer and until 5:00 PM in winter. They are located opposite the Great Mosque of Kairouan and can be reached on foot from the historic center. To confirm updated hours, you can check the official municipal website.
General admission costs 5 TND (approximately €1.50). Tunisian residents and students pay a reduced rate. Only cash payments are accepted (Tunisian dinars).
Allow about 1 hour to walk around the basins and read the information panels. If you plan to take detailed photographs or spend time contemplating the site, your visit could last up to 1 hour and 30 minutes.
They are a marvel of 9th-century engineering (around the year 860), built under the Aghlabid caliphate to supply water to Kairouan. They were crucial to the city's urban development and are now part of Tunisia's national heritage, located in a UNESCO city.
Visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the strong sun. The ideal seasons are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), when temperatures are milder.
The ground is uneven with gravel paths, which makes wheelchair access difficult. There are also some areas with steps. A companion is recommended for assistance on uneven surfaces.
Just 500 meters away you will find the Great Mosque of Kairouan (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the walled Medina, and the Mausoleum of Sidi Sahbi. All are within walking distance.
Bring water, a hat, and sunscreen, as there are no shaded areas. Wear comfortable shoes for walking on uneven ground. There are small cafés next to the basins where you can try pine nut tea.
