Audio Guide of the El Jem Agora

The archaeological complex, which includes the Agora, is usually open every day of the week from 8:00 to 18:30 in summer (May 1 - September 15) and from 8:00 to 17:30 in winter. It is recommended to arrive early to make the most of the light and avoid the midday heat.

The visit is not free, but it is generally included in the combined El Jem ticket (approx. 12 TND), which gives you access to the Amphitheatre, the Museum, and the archaeological park where the Agora is located. It is a very affordable price for the historical value it offers.

To explore the Agora area and the surrounding Roman villas, you will need about 45 to 60 minutes. If you plan to see the whole complex with the Amphitheatre and the Museum—which is essential—set aside at least 3 hours of your day.

The Agora was the economic and social nerve center of Thysdrus, one of the richest cities in Roman Africa thanks to the olive oil trade. Walking here helps you understand the power that made it possible to build the colossal neighboring amphitheatre.

Spring (March-May) and autumn are ideal for avoiding extreme heat; as for the time of day, the best hour is 8:00 AM. That way, you will enjoy the site almost in solitude and with pleasant temperatures before the large groups arrive.

Access is challenging due to the nature of the ruins, with uneven ground, dirt, and loose stones that make wheelchair use difficult. It is recommended to go with assistance, although parts of the nearby Museum are better adapted.

You are just a few steps from the spectacular El Jem Amphitheatre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Do not miss the El Jem Archaeological Museum either, which houses one of the finest collections of Roman mosaics in the world.
