The mosque is open daily from 8:30 to 17:00, except during prayer times when it closes temporarily. Non-Muslims enter through the main gate in the medina of Kairouan; check updates at Tunisia Tourism or call +216 77 274 001.
It is free for Muslims, but non-Muslims pay around 10 TND (about €3) for access to the courtyard and minaret. Children usually enter free; check the official tourism website for updated prices.
A full visit takes 1 to 2 hours, including the courtyard, the minaret, and the prayer hall. If you hire a local guide, you can extend it to 2 to 3 hours for more detail.
Founded in 670 by Uqba ibn Nafi, it is one of the oldest mosques in the Islamic world and a UNESCO site since 1988, symbolizing the expansion of Islam in the Maghreb. It represents Aghlabid architecture with its unique minaret and impressive colonnades.
Spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November) are ideal because of the mild weather; avoid summer because of the extreme heat. Go early in the morning for fewer crowds and better light for photos.
Access is limited due to steps in the minaret and cobbled courtyards; there are no full ramps or elevators. Visitors using wheelchairs can enjoy the main courtyard, but check with local guides for assistance.
In the nearby medina, visit Bir Barouta (the sacred well), the Aghlabid Basins, and the Mausoleum of Sidi Sahib. Explore the entire UNESCO-listed medina, just a few minutes away on foot; more info at TripAdvisor Kairouan.
Wear modest clothing (cover shoulders and knees), remove your shoes when entering, and respect the prayer areas. Hire a local guide for deeper stories or use an audio guide like iAudioguia; bring water and sunscreen.
