Donde un rey astrónomo, monos ladrones y budas iluminados se encuentran en la oscuridad.
The caves are open every day from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. No advance booking is required for entry, but we recommend arriving before 4:00 PM to enjoy the natural light entering through the upper opening of the cave.
Admission is free, although voluntary donations are accepted for site maintenance. You only need to pay if you hire a local guide (around 200-300 THB), which is optional but recommended for historical details.
The full visit takes between 1.5 and 2 hours, including time to admire the rock formations, sacred statues, and take photographs. If you use a guide, the historical explanation adds about 30 extra minutes.
Khao Luang houses a Buddhist sanctuary with 19th-century statues, including an impressive Reclining Buddha commissioned by King Rama IV. The natural lighting creates a mystical effect that has made it a pilgrimage site.
The early morning hours (8:00-10:00 AM) are cooler and less crowded. If you want the most photogenic lighting effect, between March and May at 12:00 PM the beam of light shines directly on the main Buddha.
Access requires climbing steep steps and walking on uneven surfaces, so the cave is NOT wheelchair accessible. Non-slip footwear is recommended because of the humidity and slippery floors.
Very close by are: - Phra Nakhon Khiri Palace (official info) - Wat Mahathat Worawihan Temple - Phetchaburi Night Market (10 minutes by car).
1) Bring a flashlight (or use your phone's light), as some sections are poorly lit2) Wear respectful clothing (men: shoulders covered; women: knees and shoulders covered)3) Hire guides at the entrance (verified here).
