Donde la arena te lleva a una isla y las palmeras esconden dramas de tsunamis, tiburones y guerras de cocos
Mae Haad Beach is public access and open 24 hours a day. You can get there by taxi, rental motorbike, or one of the many songthaews (shared pickup trucks) that operate on Ko Pha Ngan. It is one of the best-known beaches in the northwest of the island.
Good news! Mae Haad Beach is completely free. You can enjoy its crystal-clear waters and its famous sandy stretch that connects to the island of Ko Ma at no entrance cost.
To fully enjoy Mae Haad Beach, we recommend spending at least half a day, around 3 to 4 hours. This gives you enough time to swim, sunbathe, explore Ko Ma during low tide, and perhaps go snorkeling.
Mae Haad’s main significance lies in its natural connection to the small island of Ko Ma through a sandbar that emerges at low tide. This feature makes it an iconic spot for snorkeling and underwater photography on Ko Pha Ngan.
The best time to visit is during the dry season, from November to April, when the weather is sunny and visibility for snorkeling is at its best. To avoid crowds, I suggest going early in the morning or in the late afternoon to enjoy the sunset.
Because it is a natural beach, access can be somewhat challenging for people with reduced mobility. However, some areas have concrete ramps that bring you closer to the sand, although the sandy terrain and the path toward Ko Ma can still be difficult.
Near Mae Haad, you can explore the impressive Phaeng Waterfall viewpoint about 25 minutes away by car, visit Thong Nai Pan Beach, or enjoy the nightlife of Thong Sala. You can also find other quieter beaches nearby.
Of course! Don’t forget to bring your snorkeling gear, as the area between Mae Haad and Ko Ma is ideal for it. Also bring sunscreen, a hat, water, and some cash for the small local restaurants. I recommend going at low tide so you can walk to Ko Ma. For more information about Ko Pha Ngan, you can check the official Tourism Authority of Thailand website.
