Donde las rocas cuentan secretos de tsunamis, huevos desaparecidos y una batalla entre pescadores y resorts
Kai Bae Beach is a public beach open 24 hours a day, although businesses usually operate from 10:00 to 22:00. To get there, you can easily take a shared taxi (songthaew) from the ferry pier or rent a motorbike and head south along the main west coast road.
Access to the beach is completely free for all visitors. You will only need a budget for renting sun loungers at private resorts, water activities, or enjoying the excellent cuisine at the beachfront restaurants.
I suggest spending at least a full afternoon, around 4 or 5 hours. This will give you time to swim, explore the area by kayak and, most importantly, stay to enjoy one of the most beautiful sunsets on the island.
Historically, Kai Bae has been the connection point between civilization and the untouched jungle in the south of the island. It is culturally relevant as the traditional departure point for sailing to nearby islands such as Koh Man Nai, while preserving a more relaxed and family-friendly atmosphere than other beaches.
The best time is from November to February to avoid the monsoon rains. The must-see moment is sunset (between 17:30 and 18:30), as the sun sets right behind the islands off the coast, creating an unforgettable postcard view.
Direct access to the sand can be difficult for wheelchairs, but the commercial area and many seafront resorts have paved paths and ramps. It is recommended to contact the beachfront venues to confirm their specific facilities.
You should not miss the famous Kai Bae Viewpoint, located just south of the beach, which offers incredible panoramic views. It is also very popular to rent a kayak and paddle to the small island of Koh Man Nai, which is very close to the shore.
Take advantage of low tide, as it is sometimes possible to walk almost all the way to the island opposite. Also, bring mosquito repellent if you stay until dusk, and make sure to try the fresh seafood at the restaurants that set up tables on the sand at night.
