Discover majestic Phra Pathom Chedi, the tallest Buddhist stupa in the world and a symbol of Thai history.
Phra Pathom Chedi is open every day from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. You can easily get there from Bangkok by train (the station is only 500 meters away) or by bus; for more details, check the official website of the Tourism Authority of Thailand.
Entry to the main chedi is free for all visitors. However, if you visit the adjacent museum, there is a fee of around 20 baht (approx. 0.50 euros); check updated prices on the TAT News website.
It is recommended to allow at least 1 hour to explore the main site and climb up to the base of the chedi. If you include the nearby museum, you may need up to 2 hours for a full and relaxed visit.
This chedi, one of the tallest in the world at 127 meters, dates back to the 6th century and commemorates the arrival of Buddhism in Thailand; it was rebuilt in the 19th century by King Rama IV. It is a sacred site for Buddhists and a cultural landmark in Nakhon Pathom.
The best time of day is early in the morning to avoid the heat and crowds. As for the best time of year, November is ideal during the annual festival of lights and offerings; avoid the rainy season from June to October.
The base area of the chedi is accessible with ramps and paved paths, but climbing to the upper section requires steep stairs, which may be challenging. It is recommended to contact the visitor center at +66 34 231 133 for special assistance.
Nearby you will find the Phra Pathom Chedi Museum (just a few steps away) and Sanam Chandra Palace, a beautiful royal palace 10 minutes away by car. You can also explore the Nakhon Pathom night market to try local food; more info at Tourism Thailand.
Wear modest clothing (covering shoulders and knees) out of respect for the sacred site, and bring comfortable walking shoes. Carry water and sunscreen, as the sun can be intense; join a local guided tour to learn more about its history, available through apps like iAudioguia for personalized audio guides.
