Most public beaches such as Patong or Kata are open 24 hours a day all year round. However, if you plan to visit coves that can only be reached by boat, transportation usually operates only during daylight hours, approximately from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Access to the vast majority of beaches is free, with charges only for optional services such as sunbeds or umbrellas. However, some beaches located within national parks, such as those in Sirinat National Park, may require a small conservation fee.
For a complete experience, we recommend setting aside at least half a day, around 4 hours, to relax on a main beach. If you want to explore several coves or go island hopping, reserve a full day to enjoy the surroundings and local cuisine without rushing.
Before the tourism boom, these shores were key ports for the tin and rubber trade, shaping the island's economy. They are also a symbol of resilience and natural rebirth following the exemplary recovery after the 2004 tsunami.
The best time is the dry season, from November to April, when the sea is calm and the sky is clear. To avoid crowds and extreme heat, the early morning hours, before 10:00 a.m., or sunset are ideal times.
It depends on the beach; urban areas such as Patong and Karon have paved promenades that make access easier. However, more remote or unspoiled beaches such as Freedom Beach have difficult access that is not suitable for wheelchairs.
Very close to the southern beaches, you can visit the majestic Big Buddha of Phuket, which crowns the island. We also recommend the Promthep Cape viewpoint for unmatched panoramic sunset views.
It is vital to respect the red flags: if they are raised, swimming is prohibited because of dangerous currents, even if the sea looks calm. Always carry cash, Thai baht, for local vendors and use high-protection broad-spectrum sunscreen because of the intensity of the tropical sun.
