Discover Wat Ratchaburana in Ayutthaya. A unique experience to learn about its history and significance.
Wat Ratchaburana is usually open daily from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. It is located in Ayutthaya Historical Park, and you can easily get there by tuk-tuk, bicycle, or on foot from the city center. It is a must-see stop on any tour of the park. For more information on how to get there, you can check the official Tourism Authority of Thailand website.
Admission to Wat Ratchaburana costs 50 THB per person for foreign visitors. This price is fairly standard for the main ruins within Ayutthaya Historical Park. Keep in mind that if you plan to visit several temples, the combined ticket for the Historical Park may be worth considering.
To explore Wat Ratchaburana thoroughly and admire its details, I recommend setting aside between 45 minutes and 1 hour. If you combine it with visits to nearby temples, such as Wat Mahathat, your total time in this area can easily extend to half a day or more, depending on your pace.
Wat Ratchaburana is one of Ayutthaya’s most impressive and significant temples, famous for its well-preserved prang and the discovery of numerous royal treasures and artifacts in its crypt. It was built in 1424 by King Borommarachathirat II on the site of the cremation of his two elder brothers, who died fighting for the throne. Its crypt is especially notable for its well-preserved mural paintings.
The best time to visit Ayutthaya and Wat Ratchaburana is during the dry season, from November to February, when the weather is cooler and more pleasant. During the day, I recommend going early in the morning, right when it opens, to avoid the crowds and the heat, or late in the afternoon to enjoy spectacular light for photography.
The terrain at Wat Ratchaburana is uneven, with dirt paths, stairs, and large open areas, which can make wheelchair access difficult. The main crypt is reached by a steep staircase. While much of the site can be appreciated from the main paths, mobility may still be a challenge. There are no specific accessibility facilities.
Wat Ratchaburana is strategically located in the heart of Ayutthaya Historical Park, making it ideal for exploring other nearby temples. Right next to it, to the east, is the iconic Wat Mahathat, famous for the Buddha head entwined in tree roots. Other major temples such as Wat Phra Si Sanphet and Viharn Phra Mongkol Bophit are also within easy reach by bicycle or tuk-tuk.
For your visit, bring a cap or hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water, especially if you are visiting during the hot season. Dress respectfully, with shoulders and knees covered, as it is a religious site. Consider renting a bicycle or hiring a tuk-tuk driver for the day to explore several temples in the park comfortably. And don’t forget your camera!
