Chiang Khan is an open town, so you can walk freely through its streets without paying an entrance fee. To get there, you can fly to Loei (the nearest airport) and then take a bus or shared taxi for about 1 hour. It is recommended to use Bangkok Airways or AirAsia to reach Loei.

Walking around the town and enjoying the atmosphere is completely free. Some attractions, such as Phra That Phanom Temple, or renting bicycles have small symbolic costs (between 20-50 THB). Organized tours or activities such as a tuk-tuk ride usually cost between 300-800 THB per person.

To enjoy Chiang Khan at a relaxed pace, we recommend spending at least 2 days and 1 night. One day to explore the town on foot, visit temples, and enjoy the sunset, and another to take excursions to nearby attractions such as Phu Thok or the alleys of Mak Yaeng.

Chiang Khan is a historic town over 100 years old on the banks of the Mekong River, preserving its traditional wooden architecture and Lao-Isan culture. It was once an important trade route and today is famous for its Walking Street and its relaxed atmosphere that preserves Thai authenticity.

The best time is between November and February, during the cool, dry season, with pleasant temperatures. To enjoy the town without crowds, visit on weekdays (Tuesday-Thursday) and avoid weekends and Thai public holidays. The sunsets over the Mekong River are unmissable.

The town has cobbled streets and some old buildings with steps, which can make wheelchair access difficult. However, the main Mekong riverside promenade is relatively flat. We recommend contacting the tourist information center for specific details.

Nearby are Phra That Phanom Temple (one of the most important in the region), Phu Thok mountain with its spectacular views, and Phu Suan Sai National Park. You can also cross temporarily into Laos via the Huay Xai Bridge to explore the neighboring culture.

Rent a bicycle to explore the quiet alleys and bring cash, as many businesses do not accept cards. Book your accommodation in advance if you are visiting in high season, and do not forget to try the local coffee with views of the Mekong. Use sunscreen and carry water, as the sun can be intense during the day.
